solAR system filter

by Willie “Jamie” Gant III

This project is for the Template Combo Category. I created solAR system an educational simple app to explore our solAR system. It used AR Fundamentals (Object Placement, Plane Tracker), Contextual Awareness (Semantic Segmentation, Semantic Masking), and SharedAR(Shared Object Interaction). There are no active wayspots near me so I couldn’t include VPS. This is my first project with Niantic so I just wanted to explore the different templates. I plan on exploring VPS and WayFarer to make Miami wayspots public with some cool AR content. Below is a breakdown of how all the templates were used to create solAR system. AR FUNDAMENTALS Space Sounds: It used the Object Placement Template to create SolAR: Planet Sounds. You can place the solar system and then touch the orbiting planets to hear their sounds recorded by NASA. Hear each planet’s sound to interact with the Solar System. Shuttle Drive: It used the Plane Tracker Template to create SolAR: Shuttle Drive. You first watch a video of the Space SHuttle driving through the streets and then you are able to place and drive your own shuttle. You have to have a bigger phone for the larger shuttle to be able to drive since it needs to see and allocate the ground plane in a big area. CONTEXTUAL AWARENESS Planets in the Sky: It used the Semantic Segmentation Template to create the SolAR: Sky Planets. You can look at all the planets rotating in our sky. First I provide a warning to go outside and when you press go outside, you have to scan the ground and touch it to place the solar system. Then look to the sky and using Semantic Segmentation you will see all of our planets. Sky Ground Theater: It used the Semantic Masking Template to create the SolAR: Sky/Ground Theater. You can look at the sky and ground as the movie plays and the segmentation overlays the Nasa video. I know the template uses image overlays on Sky, Ground, Trees, Artificial Ground etc, but I wanted to try to be innovative and create video overlays using these Segmentations in Lightship. It is a little rough because the Segmentation sometimes cuts out, for example, the Sky theater shows clear when no clouds are in the sky or else the clouds cut out the video. SHARED AR Apollo 11: It used the Shared Object Interaction Template. You first watch a video together with friends on the Apollo 11 Moonwalk. Then you place Apollo 11 in your world. You and your friends can walk up to the ship. If you walk close enough to explore the ship, you will hear the office NASA sounds from Apollo 11 (Launch, Landing, and Neil Armstrong Space Walk). If you walk away from exploring Apollo 11, the sound will pause.
